Notes
Walter's introduction (pp.xxi-xxiii) describes his long interest in the zoogeography region of the Sahara, intensified by his own zoological explorations in Algeria. Captain Buchanan - 'a most efficient explorer and naturalist' undertook a collecting mission for the Tring Museum, bringing back over 1,100 birds and mammals and more than 2,000 butterflies and moths. Buchanan gives his impressions of the land and its peoples, and includes descriptions of the work of collecting, trapping, hunting, skinning and preserving specimens.
