Extensive revision and expansion of the previous editions led Arthur de Rothschild to consider this fourth edition of his history of postal communications as a completely new publication. With the intention of providing a popular reference book with broad appeal, this edition is in quarto format and the text is relieved by numberous, lively illustrations by Bertall. A more detailed and thorough history of the postage stamp has been included.
