Briefe an eine christliche Freundin uber di Grundwahrheiten de Judenthums
am Main Frankfurt 1867
Clementine Henriette (Clemmie) von Rothschild Leopold Stein
Notes
Originally published posthumously as Briefe an eine christliche Freundin uber di Grundwahrheiten de Judenthums in Frankfurt in 1867, this volume was written at the suggestion of Leopold Stein, and is a series of fictional letters explaining and defending the principles of the Jewish faith in the light of typical questions raised by members of the Christian faith. Not a scholarly work in conception, but aimed at popularising Judaism. A translation from the original German in English was first published in 1869 as Letters to a Christian Friend on the Fundamental Truths of Judaism (English 1st.ed., Simpkin, Marshall and Co, London, 1869). A second English edition by the same publisher was printed in 1881. A French edition (translated from the English) was published in 1893 as Lettres à une amie chrétienne sur les vérités fondamentales du Judaïsme (Paris: Protat Frères [printer], 1893). An Italian edition translated from the French was published as in 1904 as Lettere a un'amica cristiana (Livorno: S. Belfonte,1904).
