Memoirs of the wartime experiences of Monique and her sister Nicole, as they escaped from France and joined the Free French in England. Waiting alone in Ax-les-Thermes to cross the Pyrenees the two teenagers had several encounters with the police and with German soldiers. At their hotel four officers accompanied by two Alsatians came to interrogate the hotelkeeper about the intriguing disappearance of guests, and were distracted by the table tennis table:""L'officer prend une raquette et me tend l'autre, le jeu commence, les échanges se multiplient (j'avais été championne de France junior de ping-pong). Les chiens jouent avec la balle à terre. Je l'essuie, pleine de bave. L'officier gagne le premier set 21/17. Nous changeons de côté, je me trouve alors face au petit escalier donnant accès aux chambres."Hasard ou coincidence, ma sœur descend les trois premières marches et reste figée, atterrée, puis tres vite me sourit - clins d'œil imperceptible. Je remporte le 2e set et sis bien décidée de lui laisser gagner la partie." (pp.20-21)
